“At Rock ´n´ Roll Camp, girls ranging in age from eight to 18 are taught that it´s OK to sweat like a pig, scream like a banshee, wail on their instruments with complete and utter abandon, and that ´it is 100% okay to be exactly who you are.´ The girls have a week to select a band, an instrument they may have never played before, and write a song. In between, they are taught various lessons of empowerment from self-defense to anger management. At the end of the week, all the bands perform a concert for over 700 people. The film follows several campers and what happens to the girls as they are given a temporary reprieve from being pressured to conform is truly moving and revolutionary.” —www.girlsrockmovie.com

Gulf Coast Hardcore Benefit Show
GULF COAST HARDCORE HEARTS GIRLS ROCK CAMP HOUSTON AND GIRLS ROCK CAMP HOUSTON HEARTS GULF COAST HARDCORE!
Francisco Pulido of the local punk band, H.R.A., and Frank Faerman of local grindcore band, P.L.F., have graciously organized a benefit show for Girls Rock Camp Houston.
Friday July 16 at The Ponderosa House 1503 Nance St (near the Last Concert Café) $5 bux.

Beer, Cocktail and Appetizer Night with Beaver’s and Girls Rock Camp Houston
Join us at Beaver’s on Thursday June 3, 2010 from 5pm – close when a portion of the proceeds will go towards Girls Rock Camp Houston.
Come for the beer, cocktail and appetizer and stay for the special screening of Girls Rock!; a documentary about Portland’s Rock-n-Roll Camp for Girls.
A special cocktail and mocktail are being created by Ms. Claire Sprouse specifically for Girls Rock Camp Houston. Yummy!

On Thursday, April 8, 2010, Girls Rock Camp Houston had a fundraising event sponsored by Spacetaker (http://www.spacetaker.org/culture_guide/event/cultured-cocktails-girls-rock-camp-houston) as part of their “Cultured Cocktails” series held at Boheme (http://barboheme.com/).
MyCityRocks (http://houston.mycityrocks.com/) contributed a dollar for dollar donation match for up to $500. We awarded gift bags featuring swag items from the new Runaways film to anyone who gave a donation of $50 or more.
We met lots of wonderful new people and raised a significant amount of funds which will go towards Girls Rock Camp Houston financial aid/scholarships. Thank you to everyone who attended this event.
